There are many terms in currency around the education world which display ambiguity of meaning. This is an attempt to define a vocabulary which clarifies at least what is meant when we use a word or phrase of jargon in the context of engineering education.  The following list is alphabetical: no further significance is intended by the order of terms.

wicked problem

Open problems which might have multiple (or no) solutions are known as wicked problems.

work-based learning (WBL)

 WBL traditionally involves the student earning credit for learning undertaken – formally or informally – in his/her workplace.  In some institutions it is possible to earn recognition for learning already acquired in the workplace on entry to the formal university programme.
