There are many terms in currency around the education world which display ambiguity of meaning. This is an attempt to define a vocabulary which clarifies at least what is meant when we use a word or phrase of jargon in the context of engineering education.  The following list is alphabetical: no further significance is intended by the order of terms.


A module is a unit of teaching and learning which is worth a fixed number of credits. It would usually run throughout a term, semester or year.  Shorter modules are often called ‘short, fat’ while modules running throughout a year are known as ‘long, thin’. See also block.


Massive Open On-line Courses, or MOOCs, are offered on many topics by many providers world-wide, free of cost at the point of delivery.  At present most MOOCs run over a fixed period with a specified start and finish date.
