Professor Mary Ryan FREng
Professor Ryan is pre-eminent in the area of electrochemistry. This encompasses the stability of materials, electrochemical deposition and the formation of metal and oxide nanostructures. This is of paramount importance to the field of engineering as the area encompasses corrosion of metallic structures. Her work on corrosion is outstanding and her seminal paper on ‘Why stainless steel corrodes’ in Nature is important both academically and industrially. Her most recent work, which has attracted much media attention, has been to advise on methods to preserve the recently discovered Dornier – the ‘Flying Pencil’. Her work on corrosion attracts particular interest from the oil and gas sector.
